Tamarind or sour apple (two-part nomenclature: Ziziphus mauritiana) is a tropical fruit tree, belonging to the Apple family (Rhamnaceae). In China, it is called sour apple, Indian apple or Dien apple (Yunnan apple), Yunnan hawthorn. Trees can grow very quickly even in dry areas and grow up to 12 meters tall and reach a lifespan of 25 years. It is native to Asia (mainly India) although it can also be found in Africa. The fruit is a nut, when ripe it is soft, contains a lot of water, has a sweet taste. The fruits ripen at different intervals even on just one plant and are pale green when green and pale yellow when ripe. The size and shape of the fruit depends on different varieties in the wild as well as the type grown. The fruit is eaten when ripe, soaked in wine or used to make drinks. It is a nutrient-rich fruit and contains a lot of vitamin C.
